Matching Outfits for The Grands

There's not much to write about. I've been enjoying the first few weeks of summer and not doing very much. I've got my house clean and started a few reorganization projects around the house, but nothing too challenging. Although my chandelier is now sparkling clean.

We've started converting a cabinet in the laundry room into a storage center for all my small appliances. However, most of the stuff in the cabinet belongs to Grandad so I'm going to have to wait for him to tell me where it goes. I'll snap some photos when it's done. I have found some things in that cabinet that I haven't seen in many years. Like this piece of home decor from my "country decor" days. Thank God those days are over.

Grandad spent the last few days working in Houston. He came home last night. That means that I've been home alone since Sunday. I took advantage of the time to do a little sewing for the Grands.

On the left is a tunic for Our Little Princess. On the right is a swing dress for Baby Sister. It's made by my favorite pattern for baby girls. My mother-in-law made dresses like this for Katy when she was born. Somehow I managed to hold on to the pattern for 30 years.

For some reason, Blogger is rotating this photo and I am unable to turn it.
I had one yard of each piece of fabric. The tunic required 1 1/4 yards so I had to cut both pieces. When I finished cutting it out, I was pleased to discover that I had enough left to make the swing dress for Her Highness. The swing dress is fully reversible. The tunic is trimmed with cotton lace in a natural color. The swing dress is trimmed with aqua rick-rack which is set on the edge so it shows from both sides. All the materials were already in my sewing box so the cost of both of these dresses was zero!

So the girls have their first matching outfits. I hope their mom doesn't think the matching is too cheesy.

A note to all of you who commented about Her Highness having very long legs. Grandad is 6'5" tall. Her Mom and Dad are both in the neighborhood of 6'. Our Little Princess has long legs too. Grams is 5'1". Those long legs are genetic ... but they didn't come from me.

Look How Big She Is

Baby Sister will be 8 weeks old on Monday. I haven't seen her in a couple of weeks. Katy sent this picture this morning via cell phone. I can't believe she's already so big ... just over 11 pounds. She continues to run a low grade fever on a regular basis and Katy reports that she's pretty fussy in the evenings. Just to be safe, she went back to the pediatrician this morning. He ordered a few more tests but reported that he's not worried about her. She seems to be thriving. They'll continue treating the fever with Tylenol for now.

Because of other summer travel plans, Grams probably won't be seeing her until June 23rd. That's a long time and I will admit that I'm having withdrawals. I'm thinking I may spend the next few weeks sewing up some clothes for both Our Little Princess and Baby Sister. But, I'm waiting for some guidance from their Mom. I know they both have lots of clothes. But, hey, a girl can never have too many clothes, right?

I'm also working on a list of things to accomplish this summer while school is out. Right now, I'm formulating a plan to convert the under-utilized cabinet above my dryer into a storage space for all my small appliances which now live on top of my dryer. This will require a new step stool so I can reach them and will also include removing the existing cabinet doors. Grandad is not totally opposed to this idea. So we'll start with cleaning it out. Maybe we'll get that underway tomorrow.

Today's project is cleaning the chandelier in my bathroom. It will be the first time I've disassembled and washed all the pieces of this one. Wish me luck.

I'm also still working on an appropriate nickname for Baby Sister. Right now I'm leaning towards "Her Highness" because she does seem to demand everyone's full attention. We'll see as time goes by if it fits her personality or if something else emerges.

Baby Sister's Been Sick

Baby Sister is a cuddly baby. She wants to be held. She wants to be held a lot. Okay, she wants to be held all the time. In her mother's words, "Great for Grams. Not so great for Mom."

Two weekends ago Grams had the opportunity to hold Baby Sister a lot ... pretty much all weekend. While we were setting up for the tea party, Katy said, "If you'll keep an eye on the kids, I'll finish setting everything up." That was good enough for me.

The bottom line is that, unless she's asleep, she wants to be held. If you put her down, she starts to cry fairly quickly.  This picture was sent via picture mail and was captioned "woe is me." I'm pretty sure she started crying right after this.

One of the great things about the tea party was that everyone took turns holding her. She was happy as could be and so was everyone else. Who doesn't like to hold a little baby?

That was two weeks ago. Then last weekend Baby Sister got sick. She had one eye that seemed a little runny and irritated. Katy thought it was probably allergies. Then that night she started running a fever. Katy ended up in the emergency room while Travis stayed at home with Our Little Princess. Two days later, she was still running a fever. They went back to the pediatrician for a follow-up appointment. He sent them back to the emergency room. He was concerned that her fever was not responding to treatment so he ordered a spinal tap. Initial results were clear, although they're culturing it to be sure nothing is growing. They gave her a precautionary dose of antibiotics before they sent them home.

She was much better the next day and I received this via picture mail. Her mom captioned it "happy baby."

They're off to Oklahoma for a family wedding this weekend. We're all so relieved that she's feeling better. She's only six weeks old. That's pretty little to have already been to the ER twice.

On the subject of Baby Sister, I'm not really content with that nickname. It hardly measures up to "Our Little Princess." So, I'm open for suggestions. Any ideas for a new moniker? Or maybe I should just wait and see who she turns out to be.

Catching Up and A Health Update on Grandad

Grams is home several days earlier than originally planned from attending the birth of Baby Sister. Katy had none of the complications she experienced with Our Little Princess. She was up and around and feeling very good and energetic within two days. I cooked, cleaned, and held those beautiful grand-daughters to my heart's content. But I knew it was time to go. I could just sense that the newly expanded family needed some quiet and alone time. The school where Travis works is preparing dinner for them several nights this week, Our Little Princess is in day care until the end of the week, Travis' mother will arrive this weekend, and his step-mother will also pitch in. So I felt comfortable that Katy would be able to handle a few days alone with just herself and Baby Sister. I did make it clear that all she has to do is call and I can be there within three hours.

Yesterday was a very productive day, I made a roast with caramelized onions and mushrooms for dinner. I baked cookies. And, I cleaned my kitchen from top to bottom.

That kitchen cleaning was necessitated by a fruit fly infestation. It seems that while I was gone for nine days to attend the birth of Baby Sister, I left a bag of onions on the counter. One of them sprouted and the fruit flies invaded. Living in an extremely warm and moist climate, fruit flies are just a fact of life. I can usually keep them at bay by only buying enough fresh fruit and vegetables to last for two or three days. But every now and then something gets left on the counter too long and here come the fruit flies. Ridding the house of them includes cleaning every surface in the kitchen and cleaning out the drains and the garbage disposal with baking soda and vinegar. They have a ten-day life cycle, so we have to be extremely careful for the next ten days not to leave any crumbs on the countertop and not to have any food uncovered on the counter or dirty dishes at all sitting out. That part is something of a challenge for Grandad.

Today, Grams is having one of those days where I can't seem to do anything. It's not that I can't accomplish anything, I actually can't seem to do anything. I've just been watching television and checking Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail all day.  There are plenty of leftovers for dinner, so I've decided to blog for a while. That's doing something, right?

I also want to provide an update on Grandad. While I was in San Antonio for our new baby's arrival, he went to Houston for a follow-up visit with his Electro-Physiologist. The last cardiac ablation (in January) does not seem to have improved his atrial fibrillation at all. He is going into a-fib almost every day and feeling bad a great deal of the time. So, he is again wearing a 30-day heart monitor. We expect that, based on the results, he will be scheduled for a more aggressive form of ablation which will involve open-heart surgery. We don't know a lot of the details yet except that this is considered a hybrid procedure which has been pioneered by his doctor. It will involve the same kind of ablation he's already had twice which is done to the interior of the heart and accomplished through catheters and electrodes threaded from his legs up into his heart. While one doctor is doing that, another will perform open-heart ablation on the exterior of his heart. This is done with a scalpel and will create scar tissue on the outside of the heart which will, hopefully, interrupt the abnormal impulses which cause his heart to beat out of rhythm. I will provide more details as we know them. We do know that this procedure will require a 7-10 day hospital stay and then probably another week in Houston before he's released to return to Corpus Christi. We're not sure, but we think this will be scheduled in late June or July.

What else in going on? My two favorite neighbor girls will be graduating from high school in May. Katy, Aunt B, and I are hosting a High Tea in their honor. In addition, I'm working with a group of friends from the church I grew up in (Morgan Avenue Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas) to put together a reunion sometime later this summer. More details on that later.

Baby Sister Is Here!

Meet June Frances. I had intended to call her Bubbles on this blog, but Our Little Princess has insisted that her name is Baby Sister ... so Baby Sister it will be.

She is named after two of her great grandmothers. June was Travis' paternal grandmother who passed away last summer. Frances comes from Katy's grandmother, Ruth Frances, who is Grandad's mother. It's a lovely way to honor two strong and remarkable women.

Mommy and Baby Sister
She arrived at 2:15 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2011. She weighs 7 lbs. 11 oz. Mom and baby are both doing great! They'll be home this afternoon.

I'll be staying a couple of weeks to help with the housework and the babies. Life is good!
